What are Sloth Moths?
Sloth moths are real! These insects spend most of their adult lives tucked inside the fur of sloths. The sloth’s thick, shaggy coat gives them a cozy place to live, where they can hide among the hairs and algae. When a three-toed sloth climbs down to poop, female moths lay their eggs in the dung, where their caterpillars grow before becoming moths and finding a sloth of their own. Sloths may benefit too. Nutrients from the moths can help fertilize the algae growing in their fur, and that algae may provide the sloth with extra camouflage. Together, sloths, moths, and algae form one of nature’s strangest little partnerships!
About the Author
Matt "Tastic" Herman wrote "Sloth Moths" for two reasons.
1) Once he discovered that sloth moths exist, he knew he had to tell the world.
2) Matt has spent his life following creative pursuits. Sloth Moths brings together all the skills he’s learned in one multimedia creation.
Matt’s artistry spans performance, playing unique instruments, singing, acting, emceeing, and writing. He’s thankful for your interest in Sloth Moths and hopes your family had fun learning something new!
